Anti-counterfeiting: Security for patients and producers

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), every country is now affected by counterfeit medicines. Counterfeit medicines pose a high risk for patients as well as manufacturers. Our solutions reduce this risk.

As a result, the European Commission’s Falsified Medicine Directive requires the pharmaceutical industry to employ numerous security measures. In addition to tamper evidence systems, the packaging of prescription medicine must have specific distinguishing features. These include the product code, serial number, batch designation, and expiration date.

In order to further increase the protection against counterfeiting, the respective measures are divided into three categories: visible, hidden, and forensic security features.

Forensic: Very few authorized individuals are familiar with these security features, which can only be detected with special laboratory equipment.

Hidden: Few people are familiar with these security features, detection e.g. requires scanners

Visible: Knowledge of these security features isn’t restricted; anyone can check them.

We at Körber offer numerous solutions for demonstrating that a medication is genuine or counterfeit. An example of a cost-efficient and very secure option is the “cryptoglyph” security feature, which can be invisibly integrated into every existing packaging design. The existing inks are used for this purpose. No special equipment is needed for detection.
