In order to increase production efficiency, pharmaceutical and biotech companies are increasingly relying on Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) as an integral part of Lean Six Sigma and Operational Excellence initiatives. OEE monitoring helps to identify weaknesses in production processes and select suitable optimization measures. Pharmaceutical manufacturers can thus increase the capacity of their existing plants while reducing costs.
That’s the theory. In practice, there are some challenges associated with introducing OEE monitoring. For one, it is necessary to define which data is to be taken into account. Second, you must continuously collect this data on the machines and lines, transfer it to the OEE software, calculate informative Key Performance Indicators (KPI), and make them available to the people who need them. Usually, hardware and software must be procured and maintained. Last but not least, if OEE monitoring is not part of a larger Manufacturing Execution System (MES) or Manufacturing Intelligence (MI) solution, you run the risk of building just another isolated information silo.
